How to move a WordPress site to new hosting without downtime

A step-by-step guide for UK site owners to move WordPress hosting safely: copy, test, lower DNS TTL, switch and check, or have us do it free.

Moving hosting is mostly about order. Copy first, test the copy, then switch DNS, and keep the old host running until the new one has proved itself.

Step by step

Copy the site
Copy files and database to the new host, or ask for a free migration. Do not cancel the old hosting yet.
Test the copy before anyone sees it
Open the copy on a temporary address and check pages, forms, logins and checkout.
Lower the DNS TTL, then switch
A day before, lower the TTL on your DNS records, then point them at the new host. Visitors move over within minutes.
Check, then cancel the old host
Watch for errors, confirm email still works, renew SSL if needed, and only then cancel the old plan.
