What is LiteSpeed, and why does LSCache make WordPress faster?

LiteSpeed Enterprise and LSCache explained for UK site owners: how page caching works, why it beats Apache for WordPress, and what we measured.

LiteSpeed is a web server, the software that receives a visitor's request and sends back the page. Its Enterprise edition includes LSCache, a page cache inside the server that answers repeat requests without running WordPress at all.

A cache answering a request quickly.

Step by step

  1. A request without a cache

Without a page cache, every visit runs PHP and queries the database. On our fleet that took 766 ms for a WordPress page.

  2. A request with LSCache

With LSCache, the server returns the stored page directly. The same page took 0.8 ms.

  3. How the cache stays correct

The LSCache plugin tells the server which pages to purge when you publish or edit, and never caches baskets, checkouts or logged-in pages.

  4. Enterprise compared with OpenLiteSpeed

OpenLiteSpeed is the free edition. Enterprise adds Apache configuration compatibility and features hosts rely on; we run licensed Enterprise.

If your WordPress site is slow, a server-level page cache is usually the biggest single improvement available.
