PBN footprints explained: what links a network together

The footprints that expose private blog networks, from shared IPs and CDN accounts to WordPress fingerprints, and how to avoid each one.

A footprint is anything two of your sites have in common that a search engine or a competitor could use to connect them. One footprint proves little; several together outline a network.

A mask hiding the shared traits of separate sites.

Step by step

  1. Network footprints

Shared IP ranges, one CDN account and one pair of nameservers. The fix is per-site choice of CDN and DNS, balanced across many accounts.

  2. Software footprints

WordPress version tags, generator meta, discovery links, XML-RPC and identical themes. The Zinn® Footprint plugin removes 106 of them automatically.

  3. Registration and ownership footprints

The same registrant details, registrar and registration dates. Use WHOIS privacy and vary how domains are acquired.

  4. Content and link footprints

Identical outbound link patterns, shared analytics IDs and the same author everywhere. Audit outbound links across the network and vary them.

No host can make a careless network safe, but good hosting removes the footprints you cannot control yourself.
